Graphic: Karl Gustafson My teenage Anglophilia started with music—The Smiths, New Order, The Wedding Present—and quickly spread to sweets, particularly the Brits' delightful array of candy and cookies, or biscuits. As I was about to order some sugary imports during the pandemic, I realized I had the time to try making some of my favorite UK biscuits at home rather than pay inflated transatlantic shipping prices. Here's the second entry in my very own Great Biscuit Fake Off. As someone who's done lots of baking during the pandemic, it should not have surprised me that shortbread cookies contain only three ingredients. And yet… that number seems wrong. No baked treat this delicious could possibly be quite that simple. And yet, here are the parts of its great sum: Flour, sugar, butter. But is shortbread actually simple? It can be. Or you can complicate it in various tasty ways. I was inspired, of course, by the classic packaged shortbread brand Walkers, which has been in the game since 1898.

An individual's breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) following alcohol intake is influenced by several factors, including food. While it is known that food delays the stomach emptying, thus reducing BrAC, only recently has the role of nonalcoholic drink mixers used with alcohol been explored as a factor influencing BrAC. A new comparison of BrACs of alcohol consumed with an artificial sweetener versus alcohol consumed with a sugared beverage has found that mixing alcohol with a diet soft drink can result in a higher BrAC. Results will be published in the April 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View. "More attention needs to be paid to how alcohol is being consumed in the 'real world, '" said Cecile A. Marczinski, assistant professor of psychology at Northern Kentucky University. She referenced an earlier field study of bar patrons. "Researchers found that, one, individuals who reported consuming alcohol with diet beverages had the highest BrACs, as compared to all other bar patrons, and two, that women tended to be more frequent consumers of diet mixers with their alcohol.

5. 2 Localization diagnostics Before therapy the insulinoma has to be located. Insulinomas in the centimeter range can easily be located using imaging techniques. Very small, multiple adenomas on the other hand sometimes cannot be located this way. Generally, the following imaging techniques can be used: MRI (magnetic resonance angiography ( MRA) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography ( MRCP)) CT scan of the abdominal region Octreotide scan The best suited imaging technique is the MRI scan because it provides very detailed data of the topographical situation in the prospect of surgical intervention. If imaging techniques cannot successfully locate the insulinoma, the portal vein can be catheterized percutaneously or intraoperatively in order to selectively determine insulin concentrations. 6 Therapy The treatment of choice is the complete surgical resection of the insulinoma. Before and during surgery, octreotide can be supplied to inhibit insulin release. Pathological findings showing malignity of the tumor or metastases indicate interdisciplinary intervention consisting of precise surgery, chemotherapy, possibly in conjunction with radiation therapy.
